On Interviewing Top Talent | “Love ‘n Business” Podcast
Mick Arnold goes over his time-tested interviewing process with his wife and fellow CEO, Britt Arnold, in this insightful episode of “Love ‘n Business”.
Using a recent search for a Plant Managers as a real-life example, Mick explains how he begins with an on-camera initial video call with carefully selected candidates. At this stage, he’s looking to validate the technical expertise – and chemistry. He views it as a “mutual audition”. Britt does that initial call with the same intention but adds other teammates to gauge fit.
They also discuss:
- How they progress through their hiring phases. Britt waits to get a bulk of good resumes to begin scheduling initial interviews. Mick responds in real time and tracks the candidates in an excel sheet.
- How they respond to applicants they don’t feel align with their business – without damaging relationships.
- The resources the Arnold’s use when hiring for key positions.
- Having a strong positive social presence for your company can attract great talent.
- In-person vs. panel interviews and the advantages of both.
- Why Mick puts candidates through two panel interviews – one with folks who will be the candidate’s direct reports and the other with executive team members.
- Why they bring up salary sooner rather than later.
- Focusing your offer letter – adding expectations with metrics.
- The importance of making it clear that the offer is final.
- Get the documents out of the way prior to the new employees first day.
- Mick’s noticed shorter job durations – not as a red flag but as an indication of talented folks seeking the right position. Movement seems to be the norm these days, so good processes are important – as is growth potential. Britt prefers to see longer durations – as indications of loyalty.
- And more!
