How to Choose Your Foam Fabrication?

When thinking about choosing a custom foam insert for your product, it is important to know how to choose your foam. But how do you know what kind of foam fabrication you should use? There are some steps and materials you should take a look at before deciding your product of choice. Let’s take a look!

Choose a Base Foam

The first thing you should do when choosing your custom foam insert is to choose a base foam. The base foam should be chosen based on the type of product you are shipping. When you choose Arnold Packaging you will be able to choose from four different types of foam: polyurethane, polyethylene, polypropylene, and expanded polystyrene.

  • Polyurethane is a lightweight open-celled foam. It is also abrasion resistant and able to absorb shocks and recover its shape quickly. Polyurethane is the ideal choice for protecting lightweight, delicate products.
  • Polyethylene is durable and lightweight closed-cell foam that is often used for heavier items. It is highly resistant to chemicals and moisture while dampening vibrations. It is easily customized to fit the shape of your product.
  • Polypropylene is water-resistant and is resistant to mold and other bacteria that could contaminate your products. Newer versions of this foam have an elastic quality to them which helps to cushion your items. It is lightweight and extremely flexible.
  • Expanded polystyrene (ES) is a lightweight yet rigid foam. It is extremely cost effective and can be cut into different shapes using a computer. This foam is strong structurally, resistant to moisture, and is a good thermal insulation.

Choosing a Lid Foam

Once you have your base foam chosen, it is time to choose your lid. There are two main types of lids for you to choose from: convoluted or solid foam. Convoluted foam, commonly referred to as egg-crate foam is the standard lid. It offers protection while securing the foam into place. Solid foam is not widely used because it is often shallow and does not fit your product.
